Nicholas Felton: An Annual Report

After waiting some while for it to be delivered from New York City, this weekend I opened with much excitement Nicholas Felton’s Personal Annual Report 2007. This constitutes the first piece of professional design work I have ever purchased and it falls squarely within the area of print design I love the most: infographics.

For an entire year Nicholas has aggregated raw data about his everyday activities, from counting the number of pizza slices he had consumed to creating a break down by colour of all clothes he had purchased. The end product of such fastidious dedication is a graphic journal itemising in minute detail a year in the life of a freelance designer.

Or, in his own words:

[The journal marks] the third iteration in a continuing exploration of how to graphically encapsulate a year. The reports serve numerous purposes: they are an incredible encapsulation of a year’s experience; the over-the-shoulder presence of the report encourages me to do new things, go new places, try new restaurants, to keep the report interesting; and of course they appear to be a great way of introducing the world at large to my design practice.

The detail is not just limited to the confines of the journal, however. Felton has even taken the time to extend the journal’s design motif through into the envelope itself, which now sits atop a shelf having been opened with painstaking and meticulous care.

A limited edition print, I am very happy that I finally managed to get hold of a signed copy this time around.

So CK, what was your role in this report?

I seem to have written ‘published’ rather than ‘purchased’. How very Freudian. I’ll get that amended the second I’m off work.
